What the passport photo checker checks
The checker finds your face and measures it against the rules for the document you pick. Each of the nine checks maps to a rule officials actually look at, and each fail comes with a short explanation of how to fix it.
The table shows the U.S. passport rules. When you choose another document, such as a Schengen visa, the numbers change to match it.
| Check | What it looks for | Official rule (U.S. passport) |
|---|---|---|
| Face size | Head height from chin to top of head | 1 to 1 3/8 in, 50% to 69% of the photo |
| Centering | Face centered, eyes at the right height | Eye line 56% to 69% up from the bottom |
| Head tilt | Head level, not tilted or turned | Face the camera directly |
| Eyes open | Both eyes visible and open | Both eyes open (newborns are an exception) |
| Mouth closed | No open mouth or wide grin | Neutral expression or a natural smile |
| Lighting | Even exposure, not too dark or washed out | Clear, evenly lit face |
| Shadows | Shadows on the face or the background | No shadows |
| Blur | Sharp focus on the face | Clear, high-quality photo |
| Background | Plain, light and even | Plain white or off-white, no objects |
A photo validator that never uploads your photo
Most online photo checkers upload your picture to a server first. Ours does the opposite: the checking code loads in your browser, and the analysis happens on your phone or computer.
That matters for a photo of your face, and even more for immigration paperwork. Nothing is sent to us while you check, so you can test as many shots as you like without sharing them. Your photo only leaves your device if you decide to order an edited version, and then it is processed securely and deleted automatically after 90 days, or sooner from My photos. Photos are never sold.
Use it as a DV lottery, green card or visa photo check
The face rules are almost the same across U.S. documents, so the checker covers the hard part for each one. A few document-specific rules are about the file or the print, and those you can confirm in a minute yourself.
DV lottery photo check
The checker covers face size, eye line, background and expression. Then confirm the file is a JPEG of exactly 600 x 600 pixels and 240 KB or less in your file properties. A photo that breaks the rules can disqualify a DV entry, so check before you submit. See the DV lottery photo guide.
Green card photo check
The checker covers the face and background. For the print, measure the head with a ruler (1 to 1 3/8 inches), make sure the two photos are identical, and use thin glossy paper. See the green card photo guide.
DS-160 visa photo check
Check the face here, then confirm the file is a square JPEG between 600 and 1200 pixels and no more than 240 KB, with no glasses. See the US visa photo guide.
U.S. passport photo check
Check the face here, and make sure the photo was taken in the last 6 months, with no glasses.
What a photo checker cannot tell you
A checker is good at measuring. It cannot know everything an official knows, so be honest with yourself about these points.
- When the photo was taken. U.S. passport and visa photos must be under 6 months old; ATF allows 1 year; the UK allows 1 month.
- Exceptions that need paperwork. Glasses for a medical reason or a head covering worn for religious reasons need a signed statement in some cases. The checker cannot see your paperwork.
- Print size and paper. If you print, measure a photo with a ruler and use the right paper. A sheet printed with crop-to-fit turned on can come out the wrong size.
- Whether a photo was retouched. Filters and beauty modes are not allowed. Use an unedited original.
- Likeness. The photo must look like you today, for example after a big change in hair or beard.
- The final decision. Even a photo that passes every check can be questioned. Acceptance is always up to the issuing agency.

Photo failed a check? Retake it or let us fix it
Most fails have a quick fix at home. Some problems need a new photo, and some we can fix for you in the paid edit.
The paid edit fixes the lighting, replaces the background with plain white, and sizes and crops the photo to the official rules. It cannot open closed eyes, straighten a turned head, sharpen a blurry shot or remove glasses, and we never retouch faces. Those need a retake.
The Digital photo costs $16.95, and Photo + print sheet costs $18.95 with a 4x6 sheet for printing. Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked, and a full refund if the agency rejects the photo.
| Failed check | Fix at home | Fixed in the paid edit? |
|---|---|---|
| Face size | Move the camera closer or farther; keep your full head in frame | Yes, if your whole head and shoulders are in the photo |
| Centering | Center your face in the frame | Yes |
| Head tilt | Hold the camera at eye level and keep your head level | No, retake |
| Eyes open | Retake with both eyes open | No, retake |
| Mouth closed | Relax your face; a small closed-mouth smile is fine for the U.S. | No, retake |
| Lighting | Face a window in daylight | Yes, within reason |
| Shadows | Face the light and step 2 to 3 feet away from the wall | Background shadows yes; face shadows need a retake |
| Blur | Hold still, tap to focus, use the timer or burst mode | No, retake |
| Background | Stand in front of a plain light wall | Yes, replaced with plain white |

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the PhotoForPass passport photo checker really free?
Yes. The PhotoForPass passport photo checker is free to use, with no account needed, and you can check as many photos as you like. You only pay if you want the edited photo: $16.95 for the digital file or $18.95 with a 4x6 print sheet.
Does the passport photo checker upload my photo?
No. The checker runs entirely in your browser, so your photo is analyzed on your own phone or computer and is not sent to our servers. Your photo only leaves your device if you choose to order an edited version, and then it is deleted automatically after 90 days.
What does a passport photo checker check?
The PhotoForPass checker tests nine things: face size, centering, head tilt, open eyes, closed mouth, lighting, shadows, blur and background. Each check uses the official numbers for the document you choose, such as a head height of 1 to 1 3/8 inches for a U.S. passport photo.
Can I use the checker as a DV lottery photo check?
Yes. Choose the DV lottery and the checker tests face size, eye line, background, lighting and expression against the DV rules. Then open the file properties and confirm the image is a JPEG of exactly 600 x 600 pixels and 240 KB or less, since the entry form rejects other files.
Can I check a green card photo with it?
Yes. Choose green card and the checker tests the face and background against the USCIS rules: head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the top of the hair to the chin, eyes 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom, white to off-white background. For prints, also check the size with a ruler and use glossy paper.
Is a passport photo validator the same as a checker?
Yes. Passport photo validator, passport photo checker and photo compliance check are different names for the same idea: a tool that measures a photo against official rules. The PhotoForPass validator is free and runs on your device without uploading the photo.
If my photo passes the checker, will it be accepted?
A pass means the photo meets the measurable rules the checker can test, which removes the most common reasons for rejection. It is not a guarantee. The issuing agency makes the final decision and also considers things a checker cannot see, such as when the photo was taken.
Why did my photo fail the face size check?
The face size check fails when your head, from chin to top of hair, is too small or too large for the document. For a U.S. passport it must fill 50% to 69% of the photo. Selfies at arm's length often fail; have someone take the photo from about 4 feet away with your head and shoulders in frame.
Why did my photo fail the background check?
The background check fails when the area behind you has shadows, color, texture or objects. U.S. documents need plain white or off-white. Step 2 to 3 feet away from the wall and face a window. The paid PhotoForPass edit also replaces the background with plain white.
Can the checker fix my photo?
No, the checker only tells you what passes and what to change. You can retake the photo and check again at no cost. If you want a finished photo, the paid edit fixes the lighting, replaces the background with plain white, and sizes and crops it to the rules, for $16.95.
Does the passport photo checker work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The checker works in Safari, Chrome and other modern browsers on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and computers. You can take a photo with your camera right in the browser or choose one from your photo library. There is no app to download.
Can I check my baby's passport photo?
Yes. Choose U.S. passport and check your baby's photo the same way as an adult's. Keep in mind that U.S. passport rules let newborns and infants have their eyes partly or fully closed, so a closed-eyes flag on a newborn is not a problem. No parent's hands or arms may be visible.
