Nigerian passport from the US
Nigerian Passport Photo Requirements for the NIS Portal
A Nigerian passport photo for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal must be 600 x 800 pixels, under 2 MB, on a white background, with your hair off your face and ears. The portal checks the upload for fresh and renewal applications. PhotoForPass makes that file from a phone photo in about a minute, plus a sheet of passport size prints.

- Checked against official rules
Key takeaways
- The official NIS rules are short: 600 x 800 pixels, under 2 MB, white background, hair off the face and ears, no headphones or masks.
- NIS does not publish a head size, glasses rule or recency rule. We use international ICAO defaults to keep you safe.
- Your uploaded photo must pass the portal check before you book. NIS still takes a live photo at your enrollment appointment.
- Nigerian missions ask for passport sized prints without stating a size in millimeters. Ask your embassy or consulate if you are unsure.

Nigerian passport photo requirements: official rules and safe defaults
The NIS publishes only a few hard numbers for the passport photo, all for the digital upload. Where it is silent, we follow the international ICAO standard that most passports use, so the photo is safe on every point.
The table marks which rules come from the NIS image compliance page and which are our defaults. Treat the defaults as best practice, not as official NIS requirements.
| Requirement | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Digital size | 600 x 800 pixels | Official (NIS portal) |
| File size | Under 2 MB | Official (NIS portal) |
| Background | White | Official (NIS portal) |
| Hair | Must not cover the face or ears | Official (NIS portal) |
| Accessories | No headphones, masks or similar items | Official (NIS portal) |
| Lighting | Proper, even lighting | Official (NIS portal) |
| Children under 5 | ICAO relaxations, but looking at the camera with the face centered | Official (NIS portal) |
| Head size | Face fills about 70 to 80% of the photo | Our default (ICAO) |
| Glasses | Remove them | Our default (ICAO) |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed, looking at the camera | Our default (ICAO) |
| Recency | Taken within the last 6 months | Our default |
| Printed size | 35 x 45 mm passport size | Our default (NIS states no mm) |
Applying for a Nigerian passport from the US
Nigerians in the US apply online first, then finish at an embassy or consulate. The photo you upload is checked on the NIS passport portal before you move on.
Step 1: the online application and photo upload
You fill in the application and upload your photo on the NIS passport portal (passport.immigration.gov.ng), for both fresh and renewal applications. The portal has an image compliance check, so a photo with the wrong size, a colored background or hair over the ears can be flagged before you pay or book.
Step 2: the enrollment appointment
After the online steps, you attend an enrollment appointment at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC or a Nigerian consulate. NIS captures your biometrics and takes a live photo there. Bring the documents your mission lists, and check whether it also asks for printed passport photos for your type of application.
What 'passport size' means for prints
Nigerian missions ask for 2 passport sized photographs without stating millimeters. Our print sheet uses 35 x 45 mm, the most common international passport size, on a white background. If your embassy or consulate gives a different size, follow the mission's instructions.
Digital vs printed Nigerian passport photos from PhotoForPass
Every Nigerian order is built for the portal upload first, with prints as an option. You get the exact pixel size the NIS asks for.
- Digital photo ($16.95): a 600 x 800 pixel JPG on a white background, well under 2 MB, ready for the NIS portal.
- Photo + print sheet ($18.95): the same digital file plus a print-ready 4 x 6 inch sheet (JPG and PDF) with 8 photos at 35 x 45 mm. Print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart and cut along the guides.
Order the sheet as a standard glossy or matte 4 x 6 photo print. Prints on plain paper from a home printer look washed out and may be refused at the mission.
Why Nigerian passport photos fail the portal check
Most failed uploads come from a few simple issues. Fix these before you upload to the NIS portal.
- Wrong pixel size. A photo straight from your phone is much larger than 600 x 800 pixels. Resizing it yourself often stretches the face.
- Background not white. Gray, cream or colored walls, patterns, or a door behind you.
- Hair over the face or ears. Tie hair back or tuck it behind the ears so both ears are visible.
- Headphones, earbuds or masks. Remove anything on the ears or face.
- Poor lighting. Dark photos, harsh shadows on one side of the face, or glare on the skin.
- Glasses. Glare on lenses is a common problem. NIS gives no glasses rule, so the safest choice is to take them off.
- File too large. Anything 2 MB or more is rejected.
- Head tilted or not centered. Look straight at the camera with your face in the middle of the frame.
Nigerian passport photos for babies and children
Children under 5 get some ICAO relaxations on the NIS portal, but the child must still look at the camera with the face centered. That is the hardest part with toddlers, so plan for a few tries.
Seat the child against a plain white wall or lay a baby on a white sheet and shoot from above, with the phone parallel to the face. Keep hands, toys and other people out of the frame, and take several photos so you can pick the one where the child looks straight ahead.
How PhotoForPass makes your Nigerian passport photo
PhotoForPass turns a phone photo into a 600 x 800 pixel NIS portal file. You take or upload a photo on any phone or computer, and our checks run in your browser before you pay, so your photo stays on your device until then.
We check face position, eyes, ears, lighting and shadows, fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white, and size and crop the photo to the NIS pixel size and our 35 x 45 mm print layout. Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, and files are ready about 30 to 60 seconds after payment.
Because NIS publishes only part of the rules, final acceptance is up to the Nigeria Immigration Service. If your photo is rejected, our 14-day money-back guarantee gives you a full refund.
How to take a Nigerian passport photo at home
About 5 minutes
-
Step 1: Stand in front of a plain wall
Use a plain white or very light wall with nothing behind you. Stand about one step away from it to avoid shadows.
-
Step 2: Get even light
Face a window or soft light so your face is evenly lit, with no dark side and no shine. Avoid strong overhead light.
-
Step 3: Clear your face and ears
Tie hair back or tuck it behind your ears so both ears show. Remove glasses, headphones, earbuds and masks.
-
Step 4: Position the camera
Ask someone to hold the phone at your eye level about 1.5 m (5 ft) away, using the rear camera. Include your head and shoulders.
-
Step 5: Hold a neutral expression
Look straight at the camera with your mouth closed and eyes open. Keep your head level and centered.
-
Step 6: Check and download
Upload the photo to PhotoForPass, review the checks, then download the 600 x 800 pixel file for the NIS portal and the print sheet if you need it.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Nigerian passport photo for the online application?
The NIS passport portal asks for a photo of 600 x 800 pixels, under 2 MB, on a white background. Your hair must not cover your face or ears, and headphones, masks and similar items are not allowed. The portal checks the photo for fresh and renewal applications before you continue.
What is the Nigerian passport size photo in mm?
The Nigeria Immigration Service and its missions ask for passport sized photographs but do not state a size in millimeters. The most common international passport size is 35 x 45 mm, and that is what the PhotoForPass print sheet uses. If your embassy or consulate lists a different size, follow its instructions.
What background color is required for a Nigerian passport photo?
White. The NIS portal makes a white background mandatory for the uploaded photo, and the US embassy describes the background as preferably white. Avoid gray, cream or colored walls, patterns and shadows. PhotoForPass replaces the background with plain white for both the digital file and the prints.
Can I wear glasses in a Nigerian passport photo?
NIS does not publish a glasses rule. Under the international ICAO standard, glasses often cause rejections because of glare or frames over the eyes, so we recommend removing them for your Nigerian passport photo. If you must wear them for medical reasons, make sure there is no glare and the eyes are fully visible.
Can I wear a head covering in a Nigerian passport photo?
NIS only states that hair must not cover the face or ears. Religious head coverings that leave the whole face visible are common in passport photos, but NIS does not publish a specific rule. If you wear one, keep your full face clear from chin to forehead and confirm with your embassy or consulate if you are unsure.
How recent should a Nigerian passport photo be?
NIS does not state a time limit. To be safe, use a photo taken within the last 6 months that matches how you look today. PhotoForPass makes a new photo from a picture you take now, so it will match your appearance at the enrollment appointment, where NIS also takes a live photo.
Do I still need a photo if NIS takes one at my appointment?
Yes. The NIS portal asks for an ICAO compliant photo upload as part of the online application, and it checks it before you continue. At the enrollment appointment at the embassy or consulate, NIS then captures your biometrics and takes a live photo. Some routes also ask for 2 passport sized prints.
Where do I enroll for a Nigerian passport in the US?
After applying online on the NIS passport portal, you attend an enrollment appointment at the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, DC or a Nigerian consulate in the US. NIS captures biometrics and a live photo there. Check the mission website for its current document list and booking steps before you go.
Can I take a Nigerian passport photo at home with my phone?
Yes. Stand in front of a plain white wall in soft, even light, tuck your hair behind your ears, remove glasses and earbuds, and have someone take the photo at eye level with the rear camera. PhotoForPass checks it and prepares the 600 x 800 pixel file for the NIS portal.
What are the rules for a baby Nigerian passport photo?
Children under 5 get ICAO relaxations on the NIS portal, but the child must still look at the camera with the face centered. Use a plain white background, keep hands and toys out of the frame, and take several shots. Laying a baby on a white sheet and shooting from above often works best.
What if my Nigerian passport photo is rejected?
If the NIS portal or your mission rejects the photo, you will need a new one before you continue. Final acceptance is up to the Nigeria Immigration Service. With PhotoForPass you can make a new version with one of your 3 free redos, or claim a full refund under our 14-day money-back guarantee.
