Passport photo FAQ

Passport Photo Questions, Answered

This passport photo FAQ answers what people ask most before ordering. In short: a US passport photo is 2 x 2 inches, with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall on a plain white or off-white background, taken within 6 months. PhotoForPass makes one from your phone photo for $16.95, or $18.95 with a 4x6 print sheet, with a free check first and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does PhotoForPass cost?

PhotoForPass costs $16.95 for a digital photo and $18.95 for a digital photo plus a print-ready 4x6 sheet. Family packs cost $29.95 for 2 people and $39.95 for 3 people. Holiday products cost $9.95 for a Christmas photo card, $12.95 for Photo with Santa and $14.95 for Christmas portraits or family album portraits. Every order is a one-time payment with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Is PhotoForPass a subscription?

No. PhotoForPass has no subscriptions and nothing renews. You pay once for each order with Apple Pay, Google Pay, a card or Link. There are no shipping fees, because all files are digital downloads. If sales tax applies where you live, it is shown at checkout before you confirm, so the total you see is the total you pay.

What is included in every order?

Every PhotoForPass order includes a free in-browser smart check before payment, up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, editing in about 30 to 60 seconds, downloads from your order email or My photos, encrypted storage with automatic deletion after 90 days and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Photo + print and family packs also include a print-ready 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF.

What is the difference between a photo check and a redo?

A photo check happens before you pay. It runs in your browser and reviews lighting, focus, background, head position and open eyes, so you can retake the photo if needed. A redo happens after you pay: we edit your photo again if you would like a different result. Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person.

Can I order photos for several people?

Yes. The PhotoForPass family pack covers 2 people for $29.95 or 3 people for $39.95. Each person gets a digital photo and a print-ready 4x6 sheet, with their own checks and redos. For more than 3 people, place an additional order. You can upload photos of yourself, your children or anyone who has given you permission.

Which payment methods do you accept?

PhotoForPass accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, major credit and debit cards, and Link. All payments are processed by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified provider, so we never see or store your full card number. Apple Pay and Google Pay appear automatically on supported devices and browsers. Your receipt and order number arrive by email right after payment.

Can I use one order for a different document later?

No. Each PhotoForPass order is made for one document type, and its checks and redos cannot be moved to another document or person. Even documents with the same 2 x 2 inch print size can have different digital limits. For example, a DV lottery photo must be exactly 600 x 600 pixels. If you need a second document, place a new order for it.

What are the US passport photo requirements?

A US passport photo must be 2 x 2 inches, in color and taken within the last 6 months. The head must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head, with the eyes 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom. The background must be plain white or off-white with no shadows. Glasses are not allowed, and filters or retouching are not accepted.

Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?

No. Glasses are not allowed in US passport photos. The only exception is when glasses cannot be removed for a medical reason, which requires a signed statement from your doctor submitted with your application. US visa photos follow the same rule. Take your glasses off before you take the photo, because PhotoForPass does not remove glasses in editing.

Can I smile in a passport photo?

Yes, a little. The U.S. Department of State accepts a neutral expression or a natural, unexaggerated smile in a passport photo. Both eyes must be open and you must face the camera directly. Avoid a big grin that narrows your eyes, raised eyebrows or a tilted head. If you are unsure, a relaxed, closed-mouth expression is the safest choice.

Can I wear a hijab, turban or other head covering?

Yes, if you wear it daily for religious or medical reasons. For a US passport you need a signed statement confirming that, and your full face must be visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, with no shadows on it. Permitted head coverings should be one plain color without a pattern. Hats and caps worn for fashion are not allowed.

Are filters, edits or retouching allowed in passport photos?

No. The U.S. Department of State does not accept passport photos changed with filters, beauty apps or retouching, and red-eye is not allowed either. Turn off portrait mode and beauty settings on your phone before taking the photo. PhotoForPass only adjusts the background, lighting and framing and keeps your face exactly as it is, so the photo still shows your real appearance.

How recent must a passport photo be?

A US passport photo must be taken within the last 6 months and reflect how you look now. US visa photos follow the same 6-month rule, and DV lottery entries must use a new photo, not one from a previous entry. If your look has changed a lot, for example after growing a beard or a big change in weight, take a new photo even if the old one is recent.

Does the same photo work for a US visa or a green card?

The rules are very similar: all three use a 2 x 2 inch photo, a head height of 1 to 1 3/8 inches and a white or off-white background. The difference is the format. The DS-160 visa form needs a square digital JPEG of 600 to 1200 pixels and no more than 240 KB, while green card forms need two printed photos. Choose the right document in the tool so the file matches.

How do I take a good passport photo at home?

Stand facing a window in daylight, a few feet in front of a plain wall. Ask someone to hold the phone at eye level about an arm's length or more away, or prop it up and use a timer. Remove glasses and hats, tuck hair behind your shoulders if it covers your face, keep your head straight and look at the lens. Then run the free PhotoForPass check.

Do I need a white wall for a passport photo?

No. You need a plain, uncluttered wall, but it does not have to be white. After payment, PhotoForPass replaces the background with the plain white or off-white your document requires. Avoid busy patterns, doors or shelves right behind your head, and stand a few feet away from the wall to keep shadows off it. Light-colored walls give the cleanest edges around hair.

Can I take a selfie for my passport photo?

You can, but a photo taken by someone else, or with a timer, usually works better. Arm's length selfies are close to the face, which can make the nose and face look wider and tilt the head. If you take a selfie, hold the phone straight at eye level and as far away as you comfortably can, then let the free check confirm your head position.

What lighting is best for a passport photo?

Soft daylight from a window in front of you is best. It lights both sides of your face evenly and avoids hard shadows. Do not stand with a window behind you, and avoid a single ceiling light, which casts shadows under the eyes. Turn off the camera flash if it causes glare or red-eye. PhotoForPass evens out mild lighting problems when editing, but cannot rescue a very dark photo.

How do I take a passport photo of a baby?

Lay the baby on a plain white sheet, or place them in a car seat covered with a white or off-white blanket, and take the photo from directly above or in front. No parent, hands or toys can be visible, and pacifiers should not cover the face. Newborns may have their eyes partly or fully closed. Children under 16 apply in person with Form DS-11 and a printed photo.

What should I wear for a passport photo?

Wear normal everyday clothes, ideally in a medium or dark color that contrasts with a white background. Uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform and camouflage are not allowed in US passport photos. Remove hats, headphones and wireless earbuds. Head coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are allowed with a signed statement, as long as your full face is visible.

Can I use a photo already in my camera roll?

Yes, if it meets the rules. The photo must be taken within the last 6 months, show your full face straight on with both eyes open, have no glasses, filters or portrait blur, and be sharp and evenly lit. Group shots, cropped party photos and screenshots rarely work. Upload it to PhotoForPass and the free check will show whether it is usable before you pay.

What do I get with the digital photo?

The PhotoForPass digital photo is a JPG sized to the official proportions of your chosen document, ready for online applications. For a US passport it is a square 2 x 2 proportion file that fits the online renewal limits of 54 KB to 10 MB. For a DS-160 visa it is a square JPEG of 600 to 1200 pixels and no more than 240 KB. You download it right after processing.

Can I use the digital photo for online passport renewal?

Yes. The State Department's online renewal system accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and HEIF files from 54 KB to 10 MB, and the PhotoForPass digital file fits those limits. Download the file and upload it directly. Do not text or message it to yourself first, because messaging apps compress photos. Children under 16 cannot renew online and need a printed photo with Form DS-11.

How do I print passport photos at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart?

Download the 4x6 print sheet JPG from your PhotoForPass order. Open the CVS, Walgreens or Walmart photo app or website, upload the JPG and order one standard 4x6 print for store pickup. Choose actual size and turn off any automatic crop or fit option. After pickup, cut along the photo edges with scissors or a paper trimmer so each photo is exactly 2 x 2 inches.

Can I print passport photos at home?

Yes. Print the PDF or JPG sheet on 4x6 matte or glossy photo paper, the paper types the State Department lists for passport photos. Set the printer to actual size or 100 percent, with no scaling, and choose the best photo quality setting. Plain office paper is not suitable. Measure one photo with a ruler after printing: it should be exactly 2 x 2 inches.

How many photos fit on the 4x6 sheet?

A 4x6 sheet holds 6 US 2x2 photos when printed borderless, because three rows of two photos fill the sheet exactly. With cut guides and small gaps between photos, it holds 2. Most US applications need one or two photos, so one sheet is usually enough, with spares. Other sizes fit differently: a 4x6 sheet holds 8 photos of 35 x 45 mm.

What paper do passport photos need?

The DS-11 instructions call for matte or glossy photo-quality paper for US passport photos. USCIS asks for thin glossy paper, unmounted and unretouched, for green card and other immigration photos. Do not print on plain office paper or cardstock, and do not laminate the photos. Photo counters at CVS, Walgreens and Walmart print on suitable photo paper by default.

What size must a DV lottery photo be?

The DV lottery photo must be a square JPEG of exactly 600 x 600 pixels and no larger than 240 KB, according to the official DV-2026 instructions. It must be a recent photo, and reusing a photo from a previous year's entry can lead to disqualification. Choose DV lottery in PhotoForPass and the file is exported at 600 x 600 pixels within the size limit.

Does my photo leave my device before I pay?

No. The PhotoForPass photo check and preview run inside your browser, so your photo stays on your device until you order. Nothing is uploaded to our servers during the check. After payment, the photo is sent over an encrypted connection so we can edit it and create your finished file. You can check as many shots as your 5 photo checks allow without sharing any of them.

How long do you keep my photos?

PhotoForPass deletes uploaded photos and finished files automatically 90 days after they are created. Until then they are stored encrypted, which gives you time to download them again if you lose a file or need a reprint. You can delete them sooner from My photos, or with the link in your order email if you did not create an account. Order records without photos are kept for accounting.

Do you use my photo for anything other than my order?

No. PhotoForPass uses your photo for one purpose only: making the photo you ordered. We never sell it, never share it for advertising, never use it to identify you and never use it to train software. Your photo is stored encrypted and deleted automatically after 90 days, or sooner if you delete it from My photos.

Is my photo encrypted?

Yes. Before you order, your photo is not uploaded at all, because the check and preview run in your browser. After you order, PhotoForPass sends your photo over an encrypted connection and stores it encrypted at rest in private storage in the United States. Only your order link or your account can reach it. The service providers we use are listed in our privacy policy.

How do I delete my photos?

If you have an account, sign in, open My photos and choose Delete next to any photo. If you ordered without an account, use the link in your order email, or write to contact@photoforpass.com from the email address you used. Deletion removes the uploaded photo and the finished files. Even if you do nothing, photos are deleted automatically after 90 days.

Is my payment information safe?

Yes. PhotoForPass uses Stripe for all payments, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified provider. Your card details go directly to Stripe, so we never see or store your full card number or security code. We only receive confirmation of payment and limited details such as the card brand and last four digits, which we need for receipts and refunds.

How does the 14-day money-back guarantee work?

If you are not happy with any PhotoForPass order, email contact@photoforpass.com within 14 days of purchase with your order number, and you get a full refund. No questions asked, although a short reason helps us improve. The guarantee covers passport, visa and ID photos as well as holiday and family products. One refund applies per order.

What if my photo is rejected by the agency?

If the U.S. Department of State, USCIS or another agency rejects a PhotoForPass photo, you get a full refund. Email contact@photoforpass.com with your order number. A photo of the rejection notice helps us improve our checks, but it is not required; please cover any passport, application or A-Number first. You can also retake your photo and ask for a redo if you need a replacement fast.

How do I request a refund?

Email contact@photoforpass.com with the subject Refund request. Send it from the email address you used for the order, or include that address, and add your order number from the receipt email. A short reason is welcome but not required. We reply within 24 hours and confirm the refund by email when it is issued.

How long does a refund take?

Once approved, PhotoForPass sends the refund to your original payment method through Stripe: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link. Your bank or card issuer usually takes 5 to 10 business days to show it on your statement. The timing after we issue the refund depends on your bank. You get an email from us when the refund is sent.

Do I need proof of rejection to get a refund?

No. You do not need proof of rejection, because the 14-day money-back guarantee covers any reason. If your photo was rejected after 14 days, contact contact@photoforpass.com with your order number and tell us what happened; a photo of the notice helps us review it quickly. Cover any passport number, application number or other ID number before sending it.

What holiday photo products do you offer?

PhotoForPass offers holiday and family products created from your own photos: Christmas portraits (6 festive scenes, $14.95), Photo with Santa (4 Santa scenes, $12.95), Christmas photo cards (3 designs with preset greetings, $9.95) and family album portraits (6 styles, $14.95). Couple portraits, memorial portraits and photo greeting cards are in the photo studio. All are digital downloads delivered within minutes.

Are the Christmas portraits real photos?

No. PhotoForPass Christmas portraits, Santa photos and family album portraits are new images created from the photo you upload, not shots from a real photoshoot. Each person is kept recognizable while your family is placed in a festive or studio scene. They are made for cards, frames, gifts and social sharing, not for official documents. Santa in the Santa photos is digitally created too.

Will the holiday portraits look like my family?

In most cases, yes, if you start with a sharp, well-lit photo where every face is clearly visible and looking toward the camera. Small details such as hands, jewelry or hair may differ from your photo, because each portrait is a newly created image. If a portrait does not look like your family, ask for a redo (every order includes 3 free redos), and the 14-day money-back guarantee applies.

Can I include pets in holiday photos?

Yes. Pets are welcome in PhotoForPass Christmas portraits, Photo with Santa, family album portraits and Christmas photo cards. For the best result, use a photo where your dog, cat or other pet is in focus, facing the camera and not hidden behind people. Pets photographed on their own work well for Santa photos too.

When should I order Christmas cards to mail them in time?

Plan to mail Christmas cards by mid December so they arrive before the holiday, and send cards abroad earlier, in early December. Order your PhotoForPass card design by December 15 at the latest so you still have time to print and address the cards. The design itself is ready within minutes, so the printing and mailing steps decide your timeline.

Do holiday products have the same privacy and refund terms?

Yes. Holiday and family photos follow the same rules as passport photos. Your photo stays in your browser until you order, is encrypted in transit and at rest afterward and is deleted automatically after 90 days. It is never sold or shared for advertising. Every holiday order also has the 14-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked.

Can I print the holiday photos?

Yes. All PhotoForPass holiday and family products are digital downloads you can print anywhere. The Christmas photo card comes as a print-ready 5x7 PDF and JPG. Christmas portraits, Santa photos and family album portraits download as image files suited to standard prints such as 4x6 and 5x7, and they also look great as phone wallpapers or social posts.

Orders and pricing

PhotoForPass charges one flat price per package, whatever document you choose: $16.95 for a digital photo, $18.95 with a print-ready 4x6 sheet, and $29.95 or $39.95 for family packs of 2 or 3 people. Every order is a one-time payment.

Each order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person. The questions below explain what those are and how payments work. Full details are on our pricing page.

Photo rules

Official photo rules come from the agency that issues your document, such as the U.S. Department of State for passports and USCIS for green cards. We build every photo to match them, but the agency always makes the final decision.

The answers below cover the rules people ask about most: glasses, smiling, head coverings, editing and how recent a photo must be. For the complete list with examples, see our passport photo requirements guide.

Taking the photo

A good passport photo starts with good light, not an expensive camera. Any recent phone works if you face a window in daylight and stand a few feet in front of a plain wall.

These answers cover lighting, backgrounds, selfies, babies and clothing. For a full walkthrough, read how to take a passport photo at home.

Digital files and printing

Whether you need a digital file or prints depends on how you apply. Online applications, like US passport renewal online and the DS-160 visa form, need a digital file. Paper forms, like the DS-11, DS-82 and most USCIS forms, need printed photos.

The Photo + print package gives you both: a digital JPG and a 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF that you can print at home or at a photo counter.

Privacy and security

Your photo stays on your device until you order, because the check and preview run in your browser. After you order it is encrypted in transit and at rest, and it is deleted automatically after 90 days.

We never sell photos or share them for advertising, and we never use them to identify you. The answers below explain how your photo is protected and how to delete it sooner.

Refunds

Every PhotoForPass order comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked, and a full refund if an agency rejects your photo.

Refunds go back to your original payment method through Stripe. These answers explain how to ask and how long it takes.

Holiday and family products

Besides official photos, PhotoForPass makes festive holiday and family images from your own photos: Christmas portraits, Photo with Santa, Christmas photo cards and family album portraits, plus couple portraits, memorial portraits and photo greeting cards in the photo studio.

These portraits are created from your photo for fun, gifts and keepsakes. They are not for official documents. The same data safety rules and 14-day money-back guarantee apply.
