Get a Digital Passport Photo Without a Store Visit
A digital passport photo is an image file you upload instead of mailing a print. For U.S. online passport renewal it must be a JPG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file from 54 KB to 10 MB; the DS-160 visa form wants a square JPEG of 600 to 1200 pixels, up to 240 KB. PhotoForPass makes the right file for your document from a phone photo in about a minute.
- 14-day money-back guarantee
- Photo stays on your device until you pay
- Checked against official rules
- 2 x 2 in format
- Head size 1 to 1 3/8 in
- Eyes open, facing the camera
- Plain white background
- Even light, no shadows
Your photo is checked on your device. Nothing is uploaded until you pay.
Key takeaways
- Digital passport photos follow the same face rules as prints. Only the delivery changes: a file instead of paper.
- Each upload system has its own limits. A file built for online renewal may be too big for the DS-160's 240 KB cap.
- First-time passports (DS-11), mail renewals (DS-82) and USCIS paper forms still need printed photos.
- For uploads, pixels and KB matter. DPI only matters when you print.

What a digital passport photo is and where it is accepted
A digital passport photo is the same compliant photo as a print, saved as a file that meets an upload system's format, pixel and file size limits. People also call it an electronic passport photo or a passport photo digital copy.
Whether you can use one depends on the application. The file limits below come from each agency's official instructions as published at our last review in November 2026. Upload pages change, so glance at the official page before you submit.
| Application | Digital accepted? | File rules |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. online passport renewal | Yes | JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF, 54 KB to 10 MB |
| U.S. passport on DS-11 or DS-82 by mail | No, print required | One 2 x 2 in printed photo |
| U.S. visa (DS-160) | Yes, required | Square JPEG, 600 to 1200 px, up to 240 KB |
| DV lottery entry | Yes, required | JPEG, exactly 600 x 600 px, up to 240 KB |
| ATF eForm 4 | Yes | JPG, JPEG or PNG, up to 3 MB |
| USCIS paper forms | No, prints required | Two identical 2 x 2 in prints per form |
| UK passport online | Yes | At least 600 x 750 px, 50 KB to 10 MB, uncropped |
Digital passport photo file format, pixels and size
Three numbers decide whether an upload works: the file format, the pixel dimensions and the file size in KB. DPI, the number people ask about most, does not matter for uploads at all.
Format
JPG (also written JPEG) is accepted everywhere on the list above. HEIC, the default on iPhones, is accepted for online passport renewal but not by the DS-160, the DV lottery or ATF eForms.
Pixels
U.S. photos are square. The online renewal page publishes no minimum, so a 1200 x 1200 pixel image is a safe choice. The DS-160 accepts 600 to 1200 pixels per side, and the DV lottery wants exactly 600 x 600.
File size
Online renewal needs at least 54 KB; the DS-160 and the DV lottery allow at most 240 KB. That is why one file rarely fits every system, and why PhotoForPass saves the file for the document you choose.
DPI
DPI only tells a printer how large to print. A 600 x 600 pixel file prints at exactly 2 x 2 inches at 300 DPI, but the upload systems only read pixels and KB. Our passport photo size in pixels guide has the full math.
Digital passport photos near me vs online
In-store passport photo services are built around prints. Some offer a digital copy, sometimes for an extra charge, and some locations do not offer one at all, so ask before you pay if you need a file for online renewal.
Getting the file online skips the trip. You take the photo at home, and the file is checked and sized for your document before you download it. If you also want prints, the 4x6 sheet prints at any photo counter for the cost of a regular 4x6 print. Our passport photos near me guide compares the in-store options in more detail.
| Option | Digital file | Trip needed | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pharmacy or retail photo counter | Sometimes; ask first | Yes | Prints are the main product |
| Post office passport photos | Not always offered; ask first | Yes | Often tied to an in-person application |
| Do it yourself with a photo editor | Yes | No | You size the head and file limits yourself |
| PhotoForPass | Yes, for your chosen document | No | Checked before you pay; print sheet optional |
Turning a printed passport photo into a digital one
You can turn a print into a file in some cases, but a new photo is usually the better choice.
- DS-160 and DV lottery: the State Department accepts a scan of a 2 x 2 inch print made at 300 pixels per inch, which gives 600 x 600 pixels. The photo must still meet every rule, including being taken within 6 months.
- Online passport renewal: take a new digital photo instead. A scan or phone picture of a print loses detail and often shows glare or paper texture.
- Never scan the photo from an ID, a passport or a previous DV entry. Copied photos are not accepted.
Snapping a picture of a print with your phone is the weakest option. The angle, glare and shadows almost always show.
How PhotoForPass makes your digital passport photo
PhotoForPass is a digital passport photo service that works from any phone, tablet or computer, with no app to install and no account required.
- Choose your document. Online renewal, DS-160, DV lottery, ATF eForms or another document, so the format, pixels and KB limit match.
- Smart check. Before you pay, your browser checks face size, centering, tilt, open eyes, closed mouth, lighting, shadows, blur and background. The photo stays on your device.
- Edit and save. After payment, we fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white, size and crop the photo, and save a JPG to the document's limits, in 30 to 60 seconds. Faces are never retouched.
The Digital photo costs $16.95. Photo + print sheet costs $18.95 and adds a 4x6 sheet in case you also need prints. Every order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked, and a full refund if the agency rejects the photo. Final acceptance is up to the issuing agency. After payment, photos are deleted automatically after 90 days, or sooner from My photos.
How to get a digital passport photo at home
About 3 minutes
-
Step 1: Take a clear photo
Face a window in daylight with a plain light wall behind you. Have someone hold the phone at eye level about 4 feet away. Remove glasses and hats.
-
Step 2: Pick the document
Open PhotoForPass and choose where the file will go, such as online passport renewal, the DS-160 or the DV lottery, so the file limits match.
-
Step 3: Run the smart check
Upload or take the photo in your browser. The check flags face size, tilt, shadows, blur and background problems before you pay.
-
Step 4: Download the file
After payment, we fix the light, whiten the background and crop and save the JPG to your document's limits. Download it straight to the device you will upload from.
-
Step 5: Upload without resending
Upload the file as is. Do not text, chat or resave it first, since that can shrink it, change its pixels or push it past the KB limit.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a digital passport photo?
A digital passport photo is an image file of a compliant passport photo that you upload to an online application instead of mailing a print. It must meet the same face and background rules as a printed photo, plus the upload system's limits on file format, pixel size and file size.
How do I get a digital passport photo?
Take a photo at home in daylight against a plain wall, with the phone at eye level, then use PhotoForPass to check it and get a file sized for your document. Some pharmacies and post offices offer a digital copy with in-store photos, but not all do, so ask before you pay.
What size is a digital passport photo in pixels?
It depends on where you upload it. U.S. online passport renewal publishes no pixel minimum, so a square image of 1200 x 1200 pixels is a safe choice. The DS-160 visa form accepts square JPEGs from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels, and the DV lottery wants exactly 600 x 600 pixels.
What file format should a digital passport photo be?
JPG (JPEG) works everywhere: U.S. online passport renewal, the DS-160, the DV lottery and ATF eForms. Online renewal also accepts PNG, HEIC and HEIF, and ATF eForms accepts PNG, but the DS-160 and DV lottery accept JPEG only. PhotoForPass delivers a JPG.
Can I use a digital photo for my first passport?
No. A first-time U.S. passport application on Form DS-11 needs one printed 2 x 2 inch photo, and so does a mail renewal on Form DS-82. Only the State Department's online renewal takes a digital file. You can print your digital photo as a 2 x 2 inch print, though.
Do CVS or Walgreens give a digital copy of passport photos?
In-store passport photo services at pharmacies are built around prints. Some locations offer a digital copy, sometimes for an extra charge, and others do not, so ask before you pay if you need a file for online renewal. PhotoForPass always gives you a digital JPG, with prints optional.
Can I scan my printed passport photo to make it digital?
For the DS-160 and the DV lottery, the State Department accepts a 2 x 2 inch print scanned at 300 pixels per inch, which gives 600 x 600 pixels, as long as the photo meets every other rule. For online passport renewal, take a new digital photo instead, since scans lose detail and often show glare.
What DPI should a digital passport photo be?
DPI does not matter for uploads. Online systems read the pixel dimensions and the file size, not the DPI value. DPI only matters when printing: a 600 x 600 pixel photo prints at exactly 2 x 2 inches at 300 DPI, and a 1200 x 1200 pixel photo prints at 2 x 2 inches at 600 DPI.
Can I email or text my digital passport photo to myself?
Avoid it. Text messages, chat apps and some email apps compress photos, which can drop a file below the 54 KB minimum for online passport renewal or blur the face. Download the file directly to the device you will upload from, or move it by cable, AirDrop or a cloud drive.
How long does it take to get a digital passport photo online?
With PhotoForPass, the smart check runs instantly in your browser, and the finished digital file is ready about 30 to 60 seconds after payment. If you want changes, every order includes 3 free redos per person. There is no shipping and no store visit.
Can I print my digital passport photo later?
Yes. A compliant digital passport photo can be printed as a 2 x 2 inch photo at any time within its 6-month window. The Photo + print sheet package includes a 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF that fits six 2 x 2 photos borderless, ready for CVS, Walgreens, Walmart or a home printer.
Is an electronic passport photo the same as a digital passport photo?
Yes. Electronic passport photo, e-passport picture and passport photo digital copy are other names for the same thing: a compliant passport photo saved as a file for an online upload. The rules are the same as for a print, plus the upload system's format, pixel and file size limits.
