2x2 Photo Online: Size, Pixels and Print Sheets
A 2x2 photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), which is 600 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI. It is the standard size for U.S. passports, visas, green cards and many other forms, with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall on a plain white background. PhotoForPass crops any phone photo to 2x2, replaces the background with white and gives you a 4x6 print sheet with six photos.

- In a U.S. 2x2 photo the head is 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall, and the eyes sit 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches above the bottom edge.
- A 4x6 print fits exactly six 2x2 photos only when printed borderless with no gaps. With cut guides, two fit.
- Not every country uses 2x2. Schengen and UK photos are 35 x 45 mm; Chinese photos are 33 x 48 mm.

2x2 photo size in inches, millimeters and pixels
A 2x2 photo is square: 2 inches wide and 2 inches tall. In print that is 50.8 mm, usually rounded to 51 mm. In pixels it depends on resolution: 600 x 600 at 300 DPI, the standard for photo printing.
The head and eye positions come from the U.S. passport and visa rules (8 FAM 402.1 and 9 FAM 303.6). You may see '22 mm to 35 mm' quoted for head height on some versions of the State Department page, but 1 inch is 25.4 mm, so follow the inch values: 1 to 1 3/8 inches.
| Measurement | Inches | Millimeters | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo size | 2 x 2 in | 51 x 51 mm | 600 x 600 px |
| Head height (chin to top of head) | 1 to 1 3/8 in | 25 to 35 mm | 300 to 413 px |
| Eye line from the bottom | 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 in | 28 to 35 mm | 338 to 413 px |
| Same photo at 600 DPI | 2 x 2 in | 51 x 51 mm | 1200 x 1200 px |
Which documents use a 2x2 photo
Most U.S. government documents use a 2x2 photo, but the details vary. Some want a print, some want a file, and a few measure the head differently.
- ATF Form 4 asks for about 1 1/4 inches from top of head to chin and allows a photo up to 1 year old.
- USCIS measures the head from the top of the hair and wants two identical prints on thin glossy paper.
- The DV lottery wants a digital file of exactly 600 x 600 pixels.
- India visa applications use a 51 x 51 mm photo, the same as 2x2.
Some common documents do not use 2x2 at all. Schengen visas and UK passports use 35 x 45 mm photos, and Chinese visas use 33 x 48 mm. Canadian passports use 50 x 70 mm and must come from a commercial photographer, so we do not sell those.
| Document | What you submit | Key detail |

| U.S. visa (DS-160) | Digital file, 600 to 1200 px, up to 240 KB | Prints only if the embassy asks |
| DV lottery | Digital file, exactly 600 x 600 px, up to 240 KB | One photo per entrant |
| Green card and USCIS forms | Two identical 2x2 prints per form | Name and A-Number on the back |
| ATF Form 4 | 2x2 print or eForms upload | Head about 1 1/4 in, taken within 1 year |
| India visa | 51 x 51 mm photo or square JPEG | Plain light or white background |
Printing 2x2 photos on a 4x6 sheet
The cheapest way to print 2x2 photos is a standard 4x6 print. A 4x6 sheet at 300 DPI is 1200 x 1800 pixels, and 2x2 photos tile it exactly: two across and three down.
That exact fit only works borderless, with no gaps between photos. Once you add cut guides or white gaps, only two 2x2 photos fit. PhotoForPass gives you the sheet as a JPG and a PDF.
Tips for CVS, Walgreens and Walmart
- Order a regular 4x6 print, not a passport photo service.
- Turn off any 'crop to fit' or 'fill' option so the sheet prints at 100%.
- Choose glossy for USCIS forms; matte or glossy works for U.S. passports.
- Measure one photo with a ruler before you cut. It should be exactly 2 inches wide.
Our print guide walks through home printers and each store's upload flow.
| Layout | Photos per sheet | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Borderless, no gaps (2 across, 3 down) | 6 | Families, USCIS packets, spares |
| With cut guides | 2 | Easy, accurate cutting with scissors |
Cropping a 2x2 photo yourself vs using PhotoForPass
You can make a 2x2 photo yourself with any image editor that crops to a square. It is doable, but the hard parts are getting the head size right, making the background evenly white and laying out a print sheet that prints at the correct size.
If you want to try the do-it-yourself route, crop to a square, resize to 600 x 600 pixels, and test the result in our free passport photo checker. If you would rather skip the measuring, PhotoForPass does it for you.
| Task | By hand in a photo editor | PhotoForPass |
|---|---|---|
| Square crop | Easy | Automatic |
| Head 1 to 1 3/8 in | Measure by eye or with guides | Set inside the official range |
| Eye line position | Easy to miss | Set inside the official range |
| Plain white background | Hard to do evenly around hair | Background replaced with plain white |
| Lighting and shadow check | Up to you | Checked before you pay |
| DS-160 file under 240 KB | Trial and error with export settings | Saved to the document's limits |
| 4x6 print sheet | Build the layout yourself | JPG and PDF included with Photo + print sheet |
| Cost | Your time | $16.95 digital or $18.95 with print sheet |
How the PhotoForPass 2x2 photo maker works
PhotoForPass is a 2x2 photo editor built around the official rules. You choose the document, and the size, head position and file limits follow that document.
Before you pay, the smart check runs in your browser: face size, centering, tilt, open eyes, closed mouth, lighting, shadows, blur and background. Your photo stays on your device until then. After payment, we fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white, and size and crop the photo to 2x2. The finished file arrives in 30 to 60 seconds, and faces are never retouched.
The Digital photo costs $16.95. Photo + print sheet costs $18.95 and adds the 4x6 sheet. Family packs cover 2 people for $29.95 or 3 people for $39.95. Every order includes up to 5 photo checks and 3 free redos per person, a 14-day money-back guarantee with no questions asked, and a full refund if the agency rejects the photo. Final acceptance is up to the issuing agency.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What size is a 2x2 photo in pixels?
A 2x2 photo is 600 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI, the standard resolution for photo prints. At 600 DPI it is 1200 x 1200 pixels. For the U.S. DS-160 visa form, any square JPEG from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels is accepted, up to 240 KB. The DV lottery wants exactly 600 x 600 pixels.
What is a 2x2 photo in mm and cm?
A 2x2 photo is 2 x 2 inches, which equals 50.8 x 50.8 mm, usually rounded to 51 x 51 mm or 5.1 x 5.1 cm. It is larger and squarer than the 35 x 45 mm photo used for Schengen visas and UK passports, so the two sizes are not interchangeable.
How do I make a 2x2 photo on my phone?
Take a photo straight on in daylight, with someone holding the phone at eye level about 4 feet away. Then upload it to PhotoForPass, choose your document and let the smart check run. After payment, we crop it to 2x2, set the head size and replace the background with white.
Is a 2x2 photo the same as a passport photo?
For a U.S. passport, yes. A U.S. passport photo is a 2x2 photo with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall on a plain white or off-white background. Other countries use different sizes: the UK and Schengen countries use 35 x 45 mm, China uses 33 x 48 mm and Canada uses 50 x 70 mm.
How many 2x2 photos fit on a 4x6 print?
Six 2x2 photos fit on a 4x6 print when it is printed borderless with no gaps, arranged two across and three down. If the sheet has cut guides or gaps between photos, only two fit. PhotoForPass gives you a print-ready 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF with the Photo + print sheet package.
Can I print 2x2 photos at CVS or Walgreens?
Yes. Upload the PhotoForPass 4x6 sheet to the CVS, Walgreens or Walmart photo service and order a regular 4x6 print, which usually costs much less than an in-store passport photo. Turn off crop-to-fit so the sheet prints at 100%, then measure and cut along the edges.
How big should the head be in a 2x2 photo?
In a U.S. 2x2 photo, the head should measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, including hair. That is 50% to 69% of the photo height, or 300 to 413 pixels in a 600 x 600 image. ATF Form 4 asks for about 1 1/4 inches.
Is there a free 2x2 photo converter?
You can crop a photo to 2x2 for free in most image editors, but you must size the head, whiten the background and lay out the print sheet yourself. The PhotoForPass photo checker is free and tells you whether a photo passes. The finished, edited 2x2 photo costs $16.95, or $18.95 with the print sheet.
Can I crop a photo to 2x2 myself?
Yes. Crop the photo to a square so the head fills 50% to 69% of the height, with the eyes 56% to 69% up from the bottom. Resize it to 600 x 600 pixels, and make sure the background is plain white with no shadows. Then test it in a photo checker before printing or uploading.
What DPI should a 2x2 photo be?
Print a 2x2 photo at 300 DPI, which means a 600 x 600 pixel image prints at exactly 2 x 2 inches. Higher resolution, such as 1200 x 1200 pixels at 600 DPI, also works and looks sharper. What matters most is that the photo prints at exactly 2 inches, so measure before cutting.
Does a 2x2 photo need a white background?
For U.S. documents, yes. U.S. passport, visa, DV lottery and USCIS photos need a plain white or off-white background with no shadows, texture or objects. ATF does not specify a background, but white is still the safest choice. PhotoForPass replaces the background with plain white.
