Honest guide: Canada
Canadian Passport Photo Requirements: Why Apps and Online Edits Fail
A Canadian passport photo must be 50 x 70 mm with a face of 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown, taken within 6 months by a commercial photographer or studio, and professionally printed. IRCC refuses home prints and photos edited in any way, even a background change. PhotoForPass does not sell Canadian passport photos, so this guide explains the rules and your real options.

Why app and online photos do not work for a Canadian passport
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets two rules that no app or online photo service can meet. The photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio, and it must be an original that is not altered in any way.
IRCC spells out what counts as altering: changes made with software, filters or editing tools, including color, brightness, contrast, sharpness, cropping, background changes and removing glare or blemishes. Every online passport photo tool, ours included, works by cropping and adjusting the image, often by replacing the background. By IRCC's definition, that disqualifies the photo.
That is why PhotoForPass does not sell a Canadian passport photo. We would rather tell you this up front than take your money for a photo that IRCC can refuse. The rest of this page explains the official requirements so you can walk into a studio knowing exactly what to ask for.
Canadian passport photo requirements (IRCC)
The table summarizes the IRCC rules for printed passport photos used in mail or in-person applications. All values come from the official IRCC passport photo page.
Two details catch people out. The photo is much taller than a US passport photo, and IRCC measures the face from the chin to the crown, meaning the natural top of the head. Light clothing can also blend into the background, so wear something darker than the wall.
| Requirement | IRCC rule |
|---|---|
| Size | 50 mm wide x 70 mm high (2 x 2 3/4 in) |
| Face height | 31 to 36 mm (1 1/4 to 1 7/16 in), chin to crown |
| Background | Plain white or light-colored, in clear contrast to the face |
| Expression | Neutral: eyes open, mouth closed, not smiling or frowning |
| Pose | Face and shoulders centered and square to the camera |
| Glasses | Allowed if the eyes are clearly visible with no glare; no sunglasses or tinted lenses |
| Head covering | Only if worn daily for religious or medical reasons, full face visible |
| Color | Color or black and white |
| Recency | Taken no more than 6 months before you submit |
| Paper | Professionally printed on plain, high-quality photo paper; no home prints, no heavyweight paper |
| How many | 2 identical photos |
| Back of photo | Studio name, full address and date taken; guarantor statement and signature where required |
Applying for a Canadian passport from the US
IRCC's page for Canadians in the US is clear: passport applications from the US have to be mailed to Canada. That means you will almost always submit printed photos, not a digital file.
Where to send it
IRCC recommends a certified courier or traceable mail service. The courier address is Government of Canada, Passport Program, 22 de Varennes Street, Gatineau, QC J8T 8R1, Canada. Regular mail goes to the Passport Program in Gatineau, QC K1A 0G3.
Fees and payment
Fees are set in Canadian dollars, so check the current IRCC fee list before you pay. You can put Visa, Mastercard or American Express details on the form, or send a certified check or money order in Canadian funds payable to the Receiver General for Canada. IRCC does not accept cash or personal checks.
The back of the photo
On one photo, the photographer writes or stamps the date it was taken and the studio's name and complete address. For new adult and child passports, your guarantor also writes 'I certify this to be a true likeness of' followed by your name, and signs. Adult renewals do not need a guarantor.
Canadian passport photo online: the digital renewal rules
IRCC also publishes rules for digital photos used in online renewals. Even here, the photo must come from a commercial photographer, which is why searching for a 'Canadian passport photo online' service will not get you a compliant file.
The digital photo must be taken in person by a commercial photographer, must not be a scanned print, and must be a JPG or JPEG saved directly from the camera's original file. IRCC asks for a 3:2 portrait image of 1200 x 1800 to 3000 x 4500 pixels, 200 KB to 5 MB, with the face filling 45 to 50 percent of the photo's height. The upload also asks for the studio's name, address and the date taken.
IRCC's guidance for Canadians in the US tells you to mail your application, so check IRCC's eligibility rules before planning an online renewal.
How to get Canadian passport photos in the US
Any commercial photographer or studio that follows every IRCC rule can take the photo. Many US photo counters are set up for 2 x 2 inch US photos, so call ahead and ask three questions.
- Can you take and print photos at 50 x 70 mm with a 31 to 36 mm face, following IRCC's Canadian passport rules?
- Do you print on professional photo paper, not plain or heavyweight paper?
- Will you write or stamp your studio's name, full address and the date on the back?
How to prepare
- Wear everyday clothes that contrast with a white or light background. Avoid white or very pale tops.
- Keep hair away from your eyes and face. Remove hats unless worn daily for religious or medical reasons.
- If you wear glasses, make sure there is no glare. Tinted lenses, including tinted prescription lenses, are not accepted.
- For babies, no hands may appear in the photo. A newborn can sit in a car seat with a white blanket behind the head, with no shadows.
Other IRCC photos and US photos you may also need
IRCC uses different photo specs for different applications, so do not assume a passport photo works elsewhere. Canadian citizenship, permanent resident card and visa applications each come with their own photo instructions. Check the instruction guide for the exact form you are filing.
If you also live with US status, US forms use a completely different photo: 2 x 2 inches on a white background. PhotoForPass does make those. See our 2x2 photo tool, the green card photo page for USCIS filings, or the U.S. passport photo if you are a dual citizen. Frequently asked questions
What are the Canadian passport photo requirements?
A Canadian passport photo must be 50 x 70 mm with a face of 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown. It needs a plain white or light background, a neutral expression and must be taken no more than 6 months before you apply. IRCC requires a commercial photographer or studio, professional printing, no edits of any kind, and the studio name, address and date on the back of one photo.
Can I take a Canadian passport photo at home or with an app?
No. IRCC says to go to a commercial photographer or photo studio to have your photo taken in person, and it does not accept photos printed at home. A selfie, a photo taken by a friend, or a file made by a passport photo app does not meet these rules, even if the size and background look right.
Can photo editing fix a Canadian passport photo?
No. IRCC requires an original photo that is not altered or edited in any way, including with software, filters or editing tools. That covers color, brightness, contrast, sharpness, cropping, background changes and removing glare or blemishes. If a Canadian passport photo has a problem, the fix is a new photo from the studio, not an edit.
What size is a Canadian passport photo in inches?
A Canadian passport photo is 50 mm wide and 70 mm high, which IRCC gives as 2 x 2 3/4 inches. The face must measure 31 to 36 mm, or 1 1/4 to 1 7/16 inches, from chin to crown. It is much taller than the 2 x 2 inch US passport photo, so a US photo cannot be used.
What goes on the back of a Canadian passport photo?
On one of the two photos, the photographer writes or stamps the date the photo was taken and the studio name and complete address. If your application needs a guarantor, the guarantor writes I certify this to be a true likeness of, followed by your name, and signs. Adult renewals do not need a guarantor.
Can a US photo studio take my Canadian passport photos?
IRCC asks for a commercial photographer or photo studio and professional printing. Its photo rules focus on who takes the photo and how it is made, so a US studio can work if it follows every IRCC rule: 50 x 70 mm, a 31 to 36 mm face, photo paper, and its name, full address and the date on the back. Call ahead, because many US counters only print 2 x 2 photos.
Can I renew my Canadian passport online from the US?
IRCC has digital photo rules for online renewals, but its page for Canadians in the US says passport applications from the US have to be mailed to Canada. Check IRCC eligibility before you plan an online renewal. Either way, the digital file must come straight from a commercial photographer's camera, uncropped and unedited, so an online photo service cannot supply it.
Can I wear glasses in a Canadian passport photo?
Yes, IRCC allows glasses in a Canadian passport photo if your eyes are clearly visible and the lenses have no glare. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not accepted, including tinted prescription lenses. If your glasses reflect the studio lights, ask the photographer to adjust them or take the photo without glasses.
Is a Canadian citizenship photo the same as a passport photo?
Not necessarily. IRCC uses separate photo instructions for different applications, including citizenship, permanent resident cards and visas. Read the instruction guide for the exact form you are filing before you book a photographer. Ask the studio to follow that guide, not the passport rules, if the two differ.
Why does PhotoForPass not sell Canadian passport photos?
Because IRCC requires an in-person commercial photographer and forbids any editing, even a background change. An online photo service cannot meet those rules, so selling one would put your application at risk. PhotoForPass makes photos for documents that accept them, such as US passports, visas and USCIS forms, and gives honest guidance for documents like this one.
