From phone photo to official size
How Online Passport Photos Work at PhotoForPass
An online passport photo from PhotoForPass is made in two stages. First, a free smart check runs in your browser and confirms your phone photo is usable, without uploading it. Then, after a one-time payment, we fix the lighting, replace the background with plain white and crop the photo to the official size in about 30 to 60 seconds. You download a digital JPG and, if you choose it, a print-ready 4x6 sheet.
Full data safety, photo stays on your device until you order
How it works
How to make a passport photo online with PhotoForPass
-
Choose your document
Pick the document you need, such as a US passport, US visa, green card or another country's passport. The tool loads that document's official size, head height and background rules.
-
Take or upload a photo
Use your phone camera in daylight, facing a window, with a plain wall a few feet behind you. Take off glasses and hats, keep both eyes open and look straight at the camera.
-
Run the free smart check
The check reviews lighting, focus, background, head position and open eyes on your device. Fix anything it flags and retake. You get up to 5 photo checks per person.
-
Choose a package and pay
Pick Digital ($16.95), Photo + print ($18.95) or a family pack. Pay once with Apple Pay, Google Pay, a card or Link through Stripe. No subscription.
-
We edit and crop your photo
In about 30 to 60 seconds, we fix the lighting, replace the background and crop the photo to the official size, keeping your face exactly as it is.
-
Download, print or upload
Download the digital JPG and, with Photo + print, the 4x6 sheet as JPG and PDF. Upload the JPG for online applications or print the sheet for paper forms.
Key takeaways
- The smart check runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded until you decide to order.
- We adjust only the lighting, background and framing. Your face stays exactly as it is.
- Each photo is cropped to the exact rules of the document you choose, such as 2 x 2 inches for a US passport.
- You get 3 free redos per person and can get a refund within 14 days.
- Photos are encrypted, never sold or shared for advertising, and deleted automatically after 90 days.

The short version: check first, pay second
PhotoForPass is built so you never pay for a photo you cannot use. The free check comes first and runs on your device; editing and downloads come only after you pay.
This order matters for two reasons. You see whether your photo works before spending anything, and your photo stays private while you decide. If the check finds a problem, such as a shadow or closed eyes, you retake the photo in seconds instead of discovering the issue at a passport acceptance facility.
The whole flow takes about two minutes on any phone, tablet or computer. There is no app to install and no account to create.
The free smart check runs on your device
The smart check is an automated review that runs inside your web browser. Your photo is not uploaded to our servers during the check, so it never leaves your device before you order.
What the check looks at
- Lighting: whether your face is evenly lit, without dark sides or strong shadows.
- Focus: whether the photo is sharp enough for an official document.
- Background: whether the area behind you is plain enough to clean up.
- Head position: whether your head is straight, centered and fully in the frame.
- Eyes: whether both eyes are open and visible.
How to read the result
Each item shows a pass or a short tip, for example to face a window or step back from the wall. Fix the issue, retake the photo and check again. You get up to 5 photo checks per person.
The check is an estimate that helps you avoid common mistakes. It cannot guarantee acceptance, because the final decision belongs to the issuing agency. If you want to test a photo you already have, try our passport photo checker.
How we edit your photo after you pay
After a one-time payment, we edit your photo the way a careful professional photo editor would. There are three jobs: lighting, background and framing.
- Lighting: we even out uneven light and soften harsh shadows on the face and behind the head.
- Background: we replace your wall with the plain background your document requires, such as white or off-white for a US passport.
- Framing: we straighten and center the photo so it can be cropped to the official proportions.
We keep your face exactly as it is: no changes to face shape, skin, eyes, hair or expression, and no beauty filters or smoothing. Agencies such as the U.S. Department of State do not accept retouched or altered photos, so this matters. Editing usually takes 30 to 60 seconds.
Cropping to the official size and checking the result
Once the edits are done, the photo is cropped and sized to the exact specification of the document you chose. Every specification comes from official government sources and is listed with its source on the document page.
For a US passport, that means a square 2 x 2 inch photo with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches tall, about 50 to 69 percent of the photo height, and the eyes 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches from the bottom. Other documents use their own numbers. A UK passport photo, for example, is 35 x 45 mm, and a DV lottery photo is exported at exactly 600 x 600 pixels.
Before you use the finished photo, compare it with your original. It should look like a true, current likeness of you. You can run a check on the finished photo too, and if anything looks off, ask for a redo.
| Document | Photo size | Head height | Background |
|---|---|---|---|
| US passport book and card | 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) | 1 to 1 3/8 in | Plain white or off-white |
| US visa (DS-160) | 2 x 2 in; digital square 600 to 1200 px | 50 to 69% of image height | Plain white or off-white |
| Green card and USCIS forms | 2 x 2 in, usually 2 prints | 1 to 1 3/8 in | White to off-white |
| UK passport (print) | 35 x 45 mm | 29 to 34 mm | Cream or light gray |
Downloads and file formats
Your files are ready right after editing. You can download them on the confirmation screen, from the link in your order email, or from My photos if you created an optional account.
Digital photo
A JPG sized to the official proportions of your document. For US online passport renewal, the State Department accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and HEIF files from 54 KB to 10 MB, and our file fits those limits. Upload it directly; texting it to yourself compresses it.
4x6 print sheet
Included with Photo + print and family packs, as both JPG and PDF. A US 2x2 sheet holds 6 photos when printed borderless, or 2 photos with cut guides. Print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart, or at home on photo paper. Choose actual size, with no auto crop, so each photo stays 2 x 2 inches. Our printing guide has step-by-step instructions.
If something looks off: redos and refunds
You have two safety nets after payment. First, you can use your 3 free redos per person if you would like us to edit the photo again. Second, every order has a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Most problems come from the original photo, not the editing. If the result looks dark or uneven, a fresh photo facing a window usually fixes it faster than another redo. If an agency rejects your photo, email contact@photoforpass.com with your order number for a full refund.
Full data safety and deletion after 90 days
Your photo is handled with the minimum exposure needed to make your document photo. Before you order it stays on your device; after you order it is encrypted and kept only as long as you need it.
- Your photo is encrypted in transit and at rest once you order.
- Photos and finished files are deleted automatically after 90 days.
- You can delete them sooner from My photos, or with the link in your order email.
- Photos are never sold or shared for advertising and never used to identify you.
- Payments go through Stripe, so we never see your full card number.
Read the details in our privacy policy and biometric data notice.
How holiday and family products work
Our holiday and family products follow the same simple flow, with one key difference: the results are festive portraits and cards created from your photo, not official photos. You upload a photo, choose the product and pay, and your new images are ready within minutes.
- Christmas portraits: 6 festive portraits of your family, $14.95.
- Photo with Santa: 4 photos of your kids, family or pets with Santa Claus, $12.95.
- Christmas photo cards: a 5x7 card in one of 3 designs with a preset greeting, $9.95.
- Family album portraits: 6 portraits in six styles, $14.95.
Couple portraits, memorial portraits and photo greeting cards are in the photo studio.
The same data safety rules, 90-day deletion and 14-day money-back guarantee apply.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do online passport photos work?
An online passport photo service turns a photo you take at home into a photo that matches official rules. At PhotoForPass, a free smart check in your browser first confirms the photo is usable. After payment, we fix the lighting, replace the background and crop the photo to the exact size, such as 2 x 2 inches for a US passport. You then download a digital file and, if you choose, a print-ready 4x6 sheet.
Does my photo get uploaded before I pay?
No. The PhotoForPass photo check and preview run inside your browser, so your photo stays on your device until you order. Only after payment is the photo sent, over an encrypted connection, for editing. This lets you test as many shots as you need, up to 5 photo checks per person, without sharing your photo with anyone.
What do you change in my photo?
PhotoForPass changes three things: the lighting, the background and the framing. We soften uneven light and shadows, replace the background with the plain color your document requires, and straighten and center the photo for cropping. We keep your face as it is, with no changes to your skin, eyes, hair or expression, because official agencies reject altered photos. Always compare the result with your original.
Will my photo still look like me?
Yes. We keep your face exactly as it is in your photo and only adjust the lighting, the background and the framing. There are no beauty filters, no skin smoothing and no changes to your features or expression. The finished photo should look like a true, current likeness of you. If it does not, ask for a redo (3 free redos per person), or for a refund within 14 days.
How long does the whole process take?
Most people finish in about two minutes. Taking the photo and running the free check usually takes a minute or less. After payment, editing takes about 30 to 60 seconds, and the files are ready to download right away. If you need prints, ordering a 4x6 print at a local photo counter or printing at home adds a little more time.
What files do I get?
With the Digital photo package you get one JPG sized to the official proportions of your document. With Photo + print or a family pack, you also get a 4x6 print sheet as JPG and PDF. A US 2x2 sheet holds 6 photos printed borderless, or 2 with cut guides. You can download files on the confirmation screen, from your order email or from My photos.
Is the photo check the same as a guarantee of acceptance?
No. The PhotoForPass smart check is an automated estimate that looks at lighting, focus, background, head position and open eyes. It helps you avoid the most common mistakes before you pay, but no service can guarantee acceptance, because the issuing agency makes the final decision. If an agency rejects your PhotoForPass photo, you get a full refund.
What happens if the finished photo does not look right?
If the finished photo does not look right, ask for a redo (3 free redos per person), and we will edit it again. If the problem comes from the original, such as a shadow, blur or a tilted head, a fresh photo facing a window usually gives a better result, and support can help you use it. If you are still not satisfied, email contact@photoforpass.com within 14 days for a full refund.
Do I need an account to use PhotoForPass?
No. You can order without an account. After payment, PhotoForPass emails you a link to your files. If you want to keep all your photos in one place, you can create an optional account and find them in My photos. Either way, photos are deleted automatically after 90 days, and you can delete them sooner yourself.
How is my photo protected after I order?
After you order, PhotoForPass sends your photo over an encrypted connection and stores it encrypted at rest in private storage. It is used only to make the photo you ordered, never sold or shared for advertising, and never used to identify you. Photos and finished files are deleted automatically after 90 days, or sooner from My photos. Payments are handled by Stripe, so we never see your full card number.
